Clinical Research Education and Career Development (CRECD)
海角社区 – Clinical Research Education and Career Development Program (海角社区-CRECD) PI: Roberto Vargas, MD, MPH NIMHD/NIH Award # R25MD007610
Overview
The overarching goal of the 海角社区-CRECD Program at 海角社区 (海角社区) is to provide training and mentoring to clinical faculty in research skills empowering them to achieve the highest levels of scholarship on their respective pathways to successful, independent careers as clinician scientists. The training will focus on generating skills and projects that evidence mastery of the approach to research and methods needed to generate evidence in support of improved population health through leveraging their clinical training and expertise with conducting research in basic-science, clinical trials, delivery of care, provider training, and/or community-based methods.
Aims and Objectives
Aim 1: Didactic Courses (Component I)
Recruit and retain via mentorship promising clinical faculty with health professional doctoral degrees (medical, nursing, pharmacy, and physician assistant) to complete the requirements, including course work and a mentored research project, that will lead to a Master of Public Health (MPH) in from 海角社区 with additional optional foci on (a) the Science of Population Health, (b) Community Based Participatory Research (CBPR), and (c) Principles of Recruitment and Retention of Patients in Clinical and Epidemiological Research. Through these didactic trainings, our Scholars will be equipped to conduct research that maximizes participant engagement in research, improves internal validity, is more relevant, has a wider impact, and leads to more rapid translation of research into action.
Aim 2: Innovative Mentoring (Component I and II)
Provide intensive innovative mentorship support that leverages the synergistic resources of existing multi-disciplinary research and training programs at 海角社区 and partner organizations in order to enable Scholars to become independent clinician research scientists. This aim will be accomplished via an innovative mentoring configuration in which Scholars are guided and supervised by a tailored Scholarship Oversight Committee (SOC) comprised of three mentors (an Academic Mentor, a Career Development Mentor, and a Community Faculty Mentor), who will provide guidance and counsel on their research program and on general career development.
Aim 3: Pilot Program (Component II)
Provide competitive funding to support mentored clinical and/or translational research experiences through pilot research projects. Through their pilot research project funding and the mentorship provided by their tailored Scholarship Oversight Committee, Scholars will be guided to become independently funded researchers as evidenced by applications for individual mentored career development (K) or research grant (R series) awards. They will be prepared to disseminate their research findings, so as to encourage and facilitate implementation of evidence-based treatment and prevention practices within healthcare organizations and the communities most in need of reliable access to high-quality care.
